We’re finally renovating our backyard. The first thing we need to do is resurface about 250sf of ugly broken multi-colored slate. We have one estimate from a well regarded firm. $9000.
Does that seem reasonable for slate? Does anyone have a great recommendation for a contractor who might come in lower? Thanks!

The neighboring building has two large dead trees that are almost the height of both our buildings. We’re concerned about the trees falling at some point. Unfortunately, the building is all rental units and the landlord doesn’t live there. Is there any city code that would require the landlord to address any danger the dead trees might pose? Any advice is appreciated.

This is my honey locust tree, last spring. For some unknown reason, it seems to have up and died this year. I don’t understand it. If it is dead, I need to have it cut down. It is much taller than my house, so this is going to be a job for experts.

Unfortunately, I am not made of money. I need someone who will come out and give a free estimate, and a fair price. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Hi all, just got my tree planted by the Million Trees city project. Does anyone know if the city also provides guards, or if that’s the owner’s obligation? Also, if anyone has any recommendations, I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

I’m going to hire someone to demolish and remove my concrete backyard. Do I need to leave a certain amount around the foundation? Of course this complicates it as they will have to use a concrete saw. There is one drain, should I try to keep it? Or will I no longer need it?

i’m (still) waiting for an estimate from bracci for a board-on-board panel fence, about 120 linear feet. While there are of course a couple of customizations my yard requires, can anybody give me a ballpark figure? My friend is a landscape architect who has worked with bracci in the past and he keeps saying it could be anywhere from 5-12K, though I don’t know what factors affect the price. How much do people pay for wood fences?

I need some help sourcing about 3 cubic yards of soil for my backyard. Does anyone have suggestions on landscaping businesses or garden centers that will sell to residential customers?

We may be buying a house next to the Prospect Expressway – the inside of the house is pretty quiet, but the backyard sounds like your next to an expressway.

Does anybody have any experience with walls for sound reduction? I’m thinking of a pier-and-panel brick wall 7′-8′ tall to block line-of-sight noise. Any other ideas? Any potential snags?

I’m starting the contractor search for a paver patio. Some contractors build on a concrete slab and some others will do over sand/stone base.
This will be a rectangular patio with 2 feed wide borders for plants. Rain water drain hole is closer to the house in another small section of concrete slab.
What is best for a typical row house back yard where the patio will be set in the back portion of the yard with no drainage?
Are paver over concrete slab better than over sand bed? How thick should the concrete slab be? one of the contractors is talking about a 4 inche slab, this seems short to me. I’m thinking a concrete slab has more risks: Cracking, harder to remove if it is ever necessary, pavers “floating” in water if badly built, water only drains on the side of the slab causing flooding problems to my house and neightbords, etc.

Please, could I get some opinions on concrete slab vs sand base? Thanks.
