We’re finally renovating our backyard. The first thing we need to do is resurface about 250sf of ugly broken multi-colored slate. We have one estimate from a well regarded firm. $9000.
Does that seem reasonable for slate? Does anyone have a great recommendation for a contractor who might come in lower? Thanks!

  1. call Dally’s slate quarry in pen argyl pa. that’s where I got my slate… it’s cheaper to get it right form the quarry… it’s only 2 hours from brooklyn…

they were cheaper than aj williams also in pen argyl… i paid around $1200 for maybe 400 or so square feet and then just had my contractor install it… saved a ton of $… of course i had to find a way to get it here….

  2. You probably mean bluestone, not slate. Keep several factors in mind when getting a quote. Dry laid paving stone needs to be 1.5″ thick at a minimum. It needs to be laid in a properly built bed of gravel and stonedust so that it drains and doesn’t freeze/buckle.

You will do a LOT better if you draw it up and fax specs to people in jersey and long island. You will pay far too much and probably get a guy who doesn’t know what he is doing if you try to hire a brooklyn guy. The suburbs are filled with masons who come into the city to work. This is a job for a mason, not a landscaper. There will be a HUGE difference in quality that will not be apparent until you have lived with it for a while.

Use the largest size pieces that you can. Installed you can expect to pay anywhere from 15-25.00 SF (a mason will be buying the stone for 2-4.00 sf) and the gravel at about 20.00 cu yard.

I was a working mason for 15 years (I stopped because I was tired of always having a sore back!) and I hate to see people get ripped off.

I would be happy to discuss it with you if you have any questions so that you are able to know how to hire someone and pay a fair price. You can reach me at cryanbvt@aol.com.

    Good luck!

  3. Call Jeff Hewwitt at Williamsburg Garden. He quoted me 3k for a similar job a few years ago. I still haven’t done. But a friend used him and thought he was great.

  4. Is the slate old? Are you sure you want to replace? 9000 sounds crazy. But, this is New York. I’m constantly amazed how much people charge here.
