Hi All,
I’m moving to Dumbo next month from Manhattan. I like to jog outside everyday…any advice on running routes from my doorstep? I’d be interested in everything from 3 miles to 10 mile routes.

I’m a young-ish female who runs around 6:30am, so safety is first priority. Where does everyone else run?

Thank you!!!

  1. I used to run over the Brooklyn Bridge and back and then into Cobble Hill and back (Henry out, Clinton back) when I lived in the Heights and loved it. Brooklyn Bridge is best when low traffic. Bikers not a problem if you can run in the pedestrian lane, which is tricky during high traffic times.

  2. Welcome!

Running over the brooklyn bridge is wonderful if you’re doing it at off-peak times. A bit crowded with tourists sometimes, but the aggressive cyclists can be a real safety hazard. But late at night or early morning it’s beautiful. And, in my experience, safe.

Add a loop to the south end promenade (up the hlll by the side of the mechanic’s if you’re feeling energetic) and you’ve got about a 3 mile loop with some good inclines to get your heart rate up.

  3. Again, depends on the length you want, but going along the water through the new park to pier 6, then along the “bike path” on Columbia St… turn onto Van Brunt, then take Imlay/Conover to the waterfront at Fairway, around to Ikea. All perfectly safe (Red Hook seems to be crawling with runners no matter the time and weather), and personally I like being by the water if I can be.

  4. The bridge runs are nice, but I’ve never cared for running Manhattan streets.

The run along the new river path and then up the hill on either Joralemon or Atlantic and then back through Boro Hall and Cadman Plaza is lovely for a quick 2-3 mile run. Tack on a couple of extra miles by turning down into Carroll Gardens (like Henry Street or Hoyt Street — if you take Hoyt or Bond Streets you can also cut through Downtown via Metrotech plaza for a change of pace).

For even more miles, turn up Union, Carroll or 3rd Street and run up to Prospect Park and take in a 3.3. mile loop there. (Or add on even more by runnning on the malls down Eastern Parkway or Ocean — but it is a little tricky getting to the Ocean paths IMO.)

Until about 6:45 these streets feel pretty safe for jogging, but obviously use your own judgment. In the other direction, I find running along Flushing Ave in the dark to be somewhat creepy but others may disagree.

  5. I had the same issue when I moved to DUMBO/Vinegar HIll 7 years ago. I don’t live in that hood anymore. But at the time I posted for a running partner on NYRR. I found one and we have been friends ever since. We would usually run across the Brooklyn Bride, thru Chinatown and back across the Manhattan Bridge. The Manhattan Bridge is pretty empty most of the time and you may not want to run it alone in the dark. Also chinatown can be smelly which isn’t that pleasant in the AM. You can also run across the Brooklyn Bridge and then down under the FDR along the trail either south and up the west side highway trail, or north along the FDR. You can turn around and go back whereever you want and both of these trails are populated, so you will feel comfortable running alone. Warning: Do not attempt to run across the Brooklyn Bridge on weekends or after 8 AM weekdays, espically in warm weather, its packed with tourists and you will not be able to run the entire bridge without stopping. It’s not worth it. It gets worse each year.

  6. I can’t recommend a complete route, but I think running across the Brooklyn Bridge and returning over the Manhattan Bridge would be great. It might be even better than my preferred Prospect Park routes.

  7. I’m not in Dumbo, but here’s a cool site

You could do a loop over one bridge and back on the other … or to Ft Greene park … or to prospect park and a lap around it and back for a longer run.
