Some bad news from Prospect Heights Patch. The owner of Milk Bar on Vanderbilt and Prospect Place says he is looking to sell the place. Business is apparently way off since the restaurant received a “C” grade from the Department of Health.

It’s a shame. I always liked Milk Bar and thought it seemed very clean and well run.

  1. “The new grading system is solely set up to raise revenue for the city, not to protect consumers.”

this is a fact. you can basically buy an A grade.

  2. Jcarch – actually that place on Flatbush has been around for hmmm about 20 plus years and my husband and his friends(they all grew up in Park Slope) have been going for years and rave about the food that comes out so it could be true that they received and A bc they keep the kitchen very clean…. – don’t just assume. But getting a C grade – man Milk Bar must have had at least 15 violations…not just fruit flies

Also getting an A doesn’t mean the place is clean enough to eat off their floors. You can STILL get up to 8 violations and get an A grade.

  3. 1. I guess he should have kept his kitchen cleaner. I love all the drama over low DOH grades, then I go by a place I would never eat in (yes I’m talking about you scuzzy nameless lottery ticket/beverage store on Flatbush/Park Place with the full kitchen in the back) and they’ve managed an A, and I wonder how hard can it really be to not get a C.

    2. Just curious, but does anyone know…if you get a bad grade, how long before you can be re-inspected? Could you be stuck for 2 years with a C? Can you pay extra to be re-inspected quickly? Someone suggest this to Bloomberg…I sense a new revenue stream for the city.

    3. I like Milk Bar, but I’m just not paying that much…so I go to the Usual across the street…1/2 the price, (though admittedly the food’s just average)…but the owners are great and set down roots way before Pros. Heights was on anybodys radar. That’s worth something in my book.

  4. not true, as per this link on Brooklynian:

“My name is Alexander Hall. I am an owner of Milk Bar. We are not selling Milk Bar. I have been miss quoted. Yes we received a C grade for a fruit fly problem that was fixed with in one week. We were extremely disappointed to receive the C grade as we pride ourselves on the cleanliness of both our stores. The new grading system is solely set up to raise revenue for the city, not to protect consumers. I was saying that due to the new letter grading system, my partner and i will not be opening any more new cafes instead concentrating on our consultancy business and hopefully a bar early next year. Due mainly to a great loyal customer base both Milk Bar and Cafe Madeline are doing extremely well and we look forward to serving you for many years to come!!”
