We are having issues with our 2 toilets and are considering just replacing them altogether. We got an estimate from a plumber we like, but it seems kind of high overall so wanted to get other opinions. Does $700 to remove and replace a toilet (including cost of toilet) sound reasonable? And if not, can anyone recommend a plumber? Thank you.

  1. My understanding — from a licensed plumber and an unrelated plumber’s assistant — is that plaster of paris is used on vinyl flooring, and silicone (removable) is used on tile.

We have vinyl flooring in the baths, and silicone does not stick to it. Hence we have plaster of paris.

Also, don’t know if this is off topic, but if the floor or subfloor is wood, you need a slate or marble slab under the toilet to stabilize it. A wood floor is not a stable surface.

  2. O.K., don’t do it yourself like Kevin said. Your not trained to do this. You have no clue what condition the closet flange is in and if the plumber is going to run into any problems. He or she(must be PC these days) is the pro. It’s not that hard to do the job if your trained for it.
The plumber you like, I assume is liscensed. If he or she(must be PC these days) is then they have a business to run just like everyone else and have overhead. Costs money to turn those lights on in the office and pay the insurance premiums etc. or haven’t you heard?
Next: What brand and model toilet are they selling you? Ask them that. Always ask lots of questions. If they shy from questions then look for another contractor.
Call Gateway PLBG. & HTG. and be done with any worry. If that’s who you called in the first place then just let them do the job.
Plumbers haven’t really used plaster paris in decades. The old timers used it before wax seals. Wax seals DO WORK!
Wax and yes–caulk. I’ve installed hundreds of toilets over the past 30 + yrs.

  3. Hey mopar, two different old school plumbers advised toilets should be set in a plaster of paris base. It was done in my reno and my last apt reno. How do you seal the toilet against the floor? That wax gasket doesn’t do it, and caulk will make it impossible to replace the next toilet without breaking it up. DIY guys, do you agree?

  4. DOB is assesing the fee of any plumbing fixture based on a cost in the range of 2,500 – 3,500 per fixture.

  5. What issues are you having?

Yes, it’s easy to install a toilet if your floors are tile over a cement slab and there’s nothing wrong with the plumbing, but it is not easy if you have, for example, a broken flange or a lead waste pipe or wood flooring.

    Etc.

  6. The plumber can probably remove and install two toilets in one hour. If they charge $150, then it’s $150. Then add in the cost of the toilets.

  7. right, you can’t really offer an opinion unless you break out the cost of the toilet. Does that include putting in a plaster of paris base?
