Hi,
I’m hoping to get some advice for the best way to patch cracked bubbles on my roof. Maybe someone can ID exactly what type of roofing material this is? It’s a flat roof and water pools in spots and has now gone through to the ceiling below in one spot.
I realize I may need to get someone in to take a look, but before the next rain I wanted to get something to at least patch it. Can I just slap some of that All-Purpose Roofing cement from Lowe’s on it?
Advice appreciated!

  1. Karnack flashing cement – its in the orange/red can. I would cut the membrane so it is at least 3″ on either side of a cut. If we are talking about bigger sections, I would allow at least a 5″ overlap.

I am not a roofer, but we did this all the time in the city and never had one reopen.

watch if your roof develops water filled bubbles along the inside of a parapit wall; that is often a sign of bigger problems. It could be leaking flashing but is indicitive of problems with mortar joints on the brickwork.

  2. I’ve had to do this quite a bit on commercial buildings in the city. Now mind you I am not a roofer. We used to use the roofing cement but we would put a membrane in there – I think they sell cloth made just for roof patches but it is not unlike the cloth tape for taping drywall seams.

As a matter of fact I did it here on my house two years ago and it is holding fine, though it is something you will want to check periodically.
