the house behind me is an old rectory which has been boarded up for a long time. Two weeks ago some workers showed up, climbed onto the roof and had at it with axes and sledgehammers. They yanked all the roofing material off and carted it away. There still appears to be roof timbers present but it’s totally open to the elements now.

An old guy from the block said they told him they were ‘renovating’ the house, and that the house is ‘landmarked’. This seems highly unlikely since no houses in this area (Bushwick) are landmarked.

It’s been two weeks since they did this and they haven’t been back. Is it possible they’re trying to accelerate the building’s demise? I don’t really have a dog in this hunt, but it seemed weird so I thought I would ask.

  1. you can report anonymously, though if your house is the only one that could possibly have seen the roof action it’s not so anonymous, but that’s likely not the case. maybe best before you enter the building so they don’t think you saw something while you were there.

  2. Here’s the tricky part: I need to ask the owner of the property if it’s okay to have workers move supplies through their property to get to mine. If they hear from me, and then find out somebody ratted them out, won’t they send their goons after me?! oh no!

  3. “I don’t see anything on the DOB site, big surprise. Why would they start removing the roof then not come right back to continue/finish? It’s pretty clear they’re pitching this as development property as the house is on an extra-wide lot (has a driveway, etc.)”

Oh…..maybe they are accelerating its demise. CALL 311!!!!!!

  5. I think you are thinking way too much of this. What probably happened is that they need a span of a few solid days with no rain so they can replace all of the rafters. Demo takes a day or two but rebuilding the roof takes longer. If they wanted to vandal the place I am sure they could have done it without being so obvious and removing the roof! lol!
