Hi! Guy came around today repairing roofs on the block. He just happened to catch me at home and offered to give us an estimate. He climbed up and took some iPhone picks that showed the silver paint is wearing off and we had some cracks at the seams and near the chimneys. He said he could repair today for $900. I searched the archieves quickly to see if it was a decent price and it seemed fair but wanted to throw up a quick post to confirm. Our home inspection was done in 2006 and I am embarassed to admit I haven’t set eyes on the roof since then. It’s a flat, rubber roof with silver coating and about 10 years old. Thoughts? Comments? Trying not to be a naive housewife.

Thanks!

  1. Its better to take look what is the condition of the roof directly not a picture.than call at least 3 roofer to get estimate.you may have another 10 years of warranty by hiring one of the propesional roofer who has licenses and insurance.Call M.Hamid Construction Co.(718)633-1500 if you need an estimate.
    Thanks.

  2. as all the other posters said stay away. We got our roof redone about 5 yrs ago and it came with a 10 yr warranty. If you know who did the roof approximately 10 yrs ago as you say you should contact them. If you are not sure, our roof was done by Premier Roofing (on Atlantic Ave) and they are coming tomorrow to do a little patching for free as part of the warranty.

  3. I worked for a hot tar roofer when I was a kid and first came to NYC. It was very common for him to go to the next door buildings and offer services. His attitude was since he was going to be in the neighborhood, and up on the roof, had the equipement there, etc. he could give a cheaper price. He was a legitimate guy. That being said, I don’t think that 900 is a great price for sixty dollars of materials and three hours work.

  4. Stay away and don’t let him up on your roof, those $900 today $1000 tomorrow guys are a recipe for disaster 🙁

  5. Letting someone that goes door to door perform work on your property–whether its cleaning gutters or more substantial work–is assuming a huge liability risk.

  6. one question: is it leaking?

If not, then why do the work? $900 isn’t going to stop it from developing a leak, and messing with a functioning roof can very easily cause it to leak.

If it is leaking, then any repair that can be done for $900 is not going to fix it for more than a week.

    Tell him you’re not interested.

  7. There’s a guy that comes around my neighborhood with a ladder and a shopping cart and offers to clean gutters for 40 bucks. I’m OK with something like that because I’d rather not have to climb up myself. He offers roof repairs too, but I wouldn’t use him. Most reputable trades people are busy enough with jobs for people come to them and aren’t roaming the neighborhood trying to scare up work.
