Hi! Guy came around today repairing roofs on the block. He just happened to catch me at home and offered to give us an estimate. He climbed up and took some iPhone picks that showed the silver paint is wearing off and we had some cracks at the seams and near the chimneys. He said he could repair today for $900. I searched the archieves quickly to see if it was a decent price and it seemed fair but wanted to throw up a quick post to confirm. Our home inspection was done in 2006 and I am embarassed to admit I haven’t set eyes on the roof since then. It’s a flat, rubber roof with silver coating and about 10 years old. Thoughts? Comments? Trying not to be a naive housewife.
Thanks!
On the other hand, if he has a good price on aluminum siding, you should definitely go for it!! 😉
This sounds somewhat like the “driveway sealant” scam in suburban neighborhoods… a guy with a pickup truck goes door to door telling homeowners that a couple of their neighbors are getting their driveways repaired and offers “substantial discounts” because “we’re going to be in the neighborhood anyway.” After he collects a few deposits he drives off, never to be seen again.
And I’ll add my endorsement of Nick/Leakmasters as well. He redid my roof last year.
He could also be casing the join.
This sounds like a very bad idea. While this guy may be legit, the scenario rings major alarm bells. This person could actually do more harm than good and you would not be able to go after him for remedy. Does he have insurance that covers his employees or would be be able to sue you if he were to injure himself on your roof. And how would you know if there’s damage that needs repair. If you’ve not seen your roof in several years, how do you know that the pics are actually of your roof?
This follows all the classic signs of a scam. If you’re concerned at all about your roof, call a reputable roofing company. However, if you’ve not given it a thought since your inspection 5 years ago, then your gut should be telling you that there’s no reason to need this person’s ‘services’.
sounds like a roll of the dice and trying to come up snake eyes.
Also, repairing cracks near the chimney, if that’s the extent of any issues, should run a few hundred dollars, not $900.
Very lıkely a scam.I don’t thınk legıtımate roofers work that way. I once saved a lıttle money by havıng my roof done together wıth my next door neıghbor, but that was arranged ın advance. IN ANY CASE, $900 for a coatıng and some flashıng repaır ıs hardly a bargaın prıce.
Be very wary of roof repairmen who go door to door.
Get estimates from reputable roofers, not “some guy” who comes through the neighborhood trolling.
Nick @ Leakmasters isvery good and recommended by a number of people here, myself included.
