Just purchased a condo and I’m looking for recommendations for a general contractor.

I plan on stripping and skim coating the walls, installing in wall wiring, redoing the kitchen and bathroom as well.

Is it recommended to get a separate contractor for the bathroom or should I let the GC handle it?

Does the GC handle obtaining the necessary permits as well?

  1. Hi,

I’ve been working with many brownstowners over recent months. I am a general contractor and a high end builder located in Cobble Hill. I have been specializing in kitchens and bathrooms for more then 12 years. I’d be happy to take a look at your space and provide an estimate. Portfolio available via email. 2. cgmodern, I found transcend to be fairly priced and easy to do business with. I had many gc’s bid and their price came in somewhere in the middle. Beside doing good work all around, one thing they did well was communicate with us. There was always someone onsite to answer questions, and that knew the work and details of our project.

  3. I have used Abdul Fedah at Heights Construction. He has a great crew, and is easy to work with. 646 235-2767.He can shw you many completed jobs in the area.

If your co-op requires drawings and permits, which it probably will, those will have to be stamped by an engineer or architect. It will be better for you, if that person is working for you and not the contractor. You will be paying for it one way or the other, hire the professional and get your money’s worth.

  4. lots of kitchen and bath magazines still around. also check out dwell, traditional home, etc, and clip what you like. if you’re still uninspired, hire a designer for a consult.

  5. I recommend Zontan Karpi (Zoli for short), a Hungarian contractor / project manager

He redid 2 bathrooms in another house, where owners were very pleased and I got the recommendation. In my house, working w/ one other guy, he replaced a shower, did plaster repair / skim coating, new drywall, did several electrical repairs & installed motion detector fixtures.

Not sure about condo rules, or permits for your project (my work was replacing / repairing what was there, so didn’t involve permits). What I spent (time & materials) was extremely reasonable.

  6. I’m an architect, and I have a few contractors I use over and over. I recommend calling Viktor at Concept Fine Interiors (917)392-0805. Nice guys, clean work, good prices. They handle all the paperwork.

  7. I recommend Transcend Construction (718)851-1140. I hired them as general contractor for similar work and have great things to say all around.

IMO, let one company handle the entire effort, just sounds easier to have one company to deal with then many.

The gc should also handle all dob stuff like permitting, inspections, sign-offs.
