So I have this ding on my rear fender. Twice in the last month, two different guys have stopped their car and offered for $100 to fix it. Same pitch, “I work for a bodyshop, its my day off, I got the tools in the back”.
While I do want to get it fixed, both times have not been convenient.
So each time I tell the guy that I do want it done, give me your number and I’ll call you.

Both times they mumble something about cant do it any other time and drive off.

It reminds me of my San Francisco days were these guys would drive around trying to sell you stereo speakers at a huge discount because they “have one set extra” after a delivery.

Anyone else had this happen to them?

  1. I never knew what the stereo speakers scam was, but it was always weird.

Once i lead the guy along and changed my mind at the last second. The saleman looked like he was going to cry. Then he started berating me.

  2. I remember when I was a kid guys used to come around our neighborhood and offer to detail your car or (better still) resurface your driveway for some insanely low price. My family always called the cops whenever these hucksters showed up. [This was the ‘burbs, so the cops always showed to shoo the people away.]

  3. Usually these guys have out of state plates. They use a filling compound on the dent. You are on your own with the paint work. If you aren’t happy with their crummy work, you can always ask for a refund when you next catch up to the Tooth Fairy. Honest.

  4. Reminds me of the guy around the corner who always used to offer to do on-street repairs. A friend coming over to work on the house had a leak from his van and the guy took him for a “repair” to replace a gasket, and proceeded to squirt some silicon where it was leaking.

I think he died … probably related to too much heroin funded by the shoddy, fraudulent work he did.

  5. if your bumper is plastic, you can use a heat gun and pop it back out if you’re able to get your hand behind the bumper. I had a ugly indent in my ’03 camry and used a rubber hammer and some really hot water to pop it back out. worked pretty good too!

  6. Yup…it’ll be full of bondo and crack right off when the temperature changes. The paint won’t match. Fugggedaboutit.

  7. Both the auto repair guys and the speaker guys were every where when I live in Boston.

A friend payed a guy to fix his car. The guy made it look good and then a day or two later the panel he worked on fell off the car.

You get what you pay for I suppose…

  8. Since like the 70’s dude. Maybe you’ve moved down a notch economically speaking and you look like you carry your “savings” in a pocket.
