If you’re looking for a reason to extend the Carroll Gardens Historic District, look no further (though they’ll have to go further than what’s currently on the table to impact this block): Although this two-floor addition to the home at 42 3rd Place isn’t done yet (it was filed in May 2009) and will presumably get a brownstone finish, it still looks like a mini-finger to us. For the owners, though, it’ll add a huge amount of space to what will be a two-family residence once it’s complete. GMAP DOB

  1. I seriously don’t understand what the problem is here… once the finish is put on, you probably wouldn’t even notice it.

    (And to the white windows… that has nothing to do with the addition)

  2. benson essentially made the point I was going to – Assuming they finish it tastefully and contextually, what’s the problem? It’s a 4-story brownstone, 5 if you count the garden level. That’s well within the standard range for this area and type of building, no? Would landmarking even prevent this? It just looks a little odd here because it’s neighbors are on the short end of the brownstone scale, but, well, that happens.

  3. ” Extending the landmark district would have done nothing to stop this extension. Its only effect would have been to ensure that the facade conforms with the taste of preservationist Luddites such as yourself.”

    And what would be wrong with that, benson???

  4. Mr. B.,Action Jackson and all;

    Once again, in your knee-jerk hatred of all new development, you didn’t even take time to think the issue through.

    The addition shown is “as of right” with the zoning law. There are many 5 story buildings in CG, from the period of its original development. Extending the landmark district would have done nothing to stop this extension. Its only effect would have been to ensure that the facade conforms with the taste of preservationist Luddites such as yourself.

  5. Whatever…you know what the ‘stoner writeup would be for No. 40 3rd Pl or No. 44 3rd Pl if they ever hit the market?

    “Unfortunately, this one is only three stories – although the price reflects that.”
