As part of the Gotham Gazette’s week-long focus on the issue of eminent domain, DDDB’s Dan Goldstein penned an essay on the Atlantic Yards project that includes some personal context for what has been a very public fight:
Within the [AY] footprint there are four historically significant buildings which are not landmarked. One building, which I live in, is a renovated 1926 warehouse (pictured) designed by George S. Kingsley with ornamentation inspired by the Egyptian Revival Movement of the 1920s. It’s the only New York example of the ornate storage warehouses that Kingsley became nationally known for (in Chicago his building is landmarked). The Kingsley building and the 1885 Spalding Building, the former factory of the sporting goods manufacturer, are adaptive re-use success stories. The renovated condos in the Kingsley warehouse opened to residents only six months before Ratnervilleas opponents call itwas announced, while the former Spalding factory opened only two years prior to the announcement. The Ward Baking Company Building, built in 1911, is remarkable for its glazed white terra-cotta façade and its storied history of innovative baking techniques in the 1920s. At that time it was called the snow-white temple of bread-making cleanliness. Ratner now has an option on the building coming due in March – and intends to demolish it.
These buildings certainly sound worth saving to us.
Life in the Atlantic Yards Footprint [Community Gazette]
Dan, we’re all behind you!!
Dan are you allergic to the truth or do you just avoid it b/c it is inconvenient??
You said and I quote:”the buyouts Ratner has done are literally with your tax money!”
EXCEPT
the MOU you cite is dated FEBRUARY 05 and the buyouts described were a done prior to 2/05 AND the ESDC and City fundig is dependant on a whoe host of contingencies being completed- not the least of which is a bond authorization or legisative appropriation- which havent happened yet SO CLEARLY the buyouts of these Condo owners was NOT done with tax dollars. But dont let the truth stop you.
go david go
uhm, i think you miss the point. david accused me of lying. so i providing a document to show that i was not lying, but rather just stating what the document says.
as for the luxury housing. yes, i live in a luxury condo. but he point was that Ratnerville’s centerpiece is luxury housing, not an arena. and that eminent domain to build luxury housing is absurd.
Luxury housing – so what – considerning the prices your neighbors got for their apts – seems you live in super ultra luxury housing right now….
no other side didn’t I read something about plumbing problems in your building…maybe that is why everybody sold so fast – it is not about the money
David, the arena cannot happen w/o eminent domain. so if i’m against eminent domain how can i be for the arena?
David, shall I show you in the MOU where it says:
“The City’s capital contribution (which is 100 million) shall be used for the same purposes as the ESDC’s capital contribution, except that the City’s capital contribution may also be used to fund a portion of the costs of acquisition of the Arena Site (other than the MTA properties)”
its here:

(page 5)
thats your money David, not an outright lie. its good to read the documents, they are enlightening.
the arena is not the centerpiece of the project by the way, the luxury housing is. the whole project is depenedent on the luxury housing.
go dan go.
No I am not concerned with $ – I am concerned with my neighborhood and my city being a safe, fun and economically vibrant place for me to raise my children and hopefully continue the same for my children.
And I am also concerned with the TRUTH – which is something you are extremely reckless with.
You make these grandiose “sky is falling” statements and you back them up with ZERO or lies –
You claim that all these people were forced out by Ratner – turns out that people literally doubled their money overnight and apparently sold out as quick as they could (no ED petitions have even been drafted yet)
You try to make yourself sound reasonable ‘This is all about ED, its is wrong to move people and if they would just stick to the railyards all would be fine’ – turns out your against the arena (the centerpiece of the entire project) no matter if eminent domain is used or not.
And know you say my tax dollars were used to buyout these condo owners – which is just an outright lie.
Dan you are correct there is no point in us having any dialogue because you have no concern for the truth, you are clearly an ego maniac who just happened to move into an apartment with just enough controversy as to give you the attention you crave so bad.
I am only comforted that your cause seems to be being ignored by every person who puts the future of this city ahead of hyperbole, and nimbysm.
Ok, David, you are great with Property Shark. wonderful. now, please provide me the list of those who have been screwed and will be screwed. who haven’t been bought out or offered one. or can’t be bought out because they own. you can’t find it on property shark.
yes, my “slightly lower scale”‘ over the rail yards does not include an arena. why? An arena doesn’t fit over the rail yards. so thats a simple one.
and there is no point in discussing this with you as we are talking past each other. it is clear to me that all that matters to you on this issue is money. if ratner offers a lot of money than all is okay (mind you there are plenty of folks he has offered no money to). well that is not how I or many others view this. see sometimes things are not about money or just about money. sometimes rights and democractic decisions are important. sometimes the right to live peacfully in your home w/o some greedy billionaire threatened you is important. sometimes civic engagment is important. sometimes people care about their neighborhoods and their neighbors.
and sometimes people only care about money.
and i wasn’t comparing anything to communist china. i was pointing out the irony that the state can be brutal in our so called democratic free market just as it can be in communist China. you think thats not true? then we just disagree, which is fine. but you can bet your Property Shark that Simon Liu will not be justly compensated.
oh yes, and those who are getting screwed are those who have are tenants or have no interest in selling, or in Ratner and his pockets, yet will be forced to sell by the State.
and guess what, the buyouts Ratner has done are literally with your tax money! you want your tax money going to make some condo owner wealthier? i guess you do.
