St. Marks Gardens Chugging Along
Every time we pass the new affordable housing development at 521 St. Marks Avenue there’s progress being made. The windows have all gone in and this building is looking closer and closer to getting finished. Doesn’t look like any prices or information on a lottery have surfaced yet. How do you think it’s shaping up?…

well to be fair they actually paid 700 PSF not to have to live in a building with poor people.

Poorer people.
I don’t like to walk that far in the cold – I’d prefer to wait 10 minutes longer for the train if I’m indoors… And I said that would be my chief complaint, so not too shabby in any case.
Not sure why subway access would be an issue? It’s actually faster to walk to EP or to Fulton than it is to take the shuttle. Your walk is 10 minutes tops at a leisurely pace in either direction.
And are those Fedders sleeves below the windows? I might actually like them better than PTACH – why do even some of the expensive new buildings use them?
Architecturally, I don’t see a tremendous difference from the new rental buildings on Fourth Ave., or even from the Crest and Novo, and the location isn’t bad, considering Franklin Ave. and nearby shops and restaurants, all of which really started when the old Brooklyn Jewish Hospital apartments started renting out in 2004. My biggest complaint would be subway access – the closest train is the Franklin Ave shuttle, with the entrance on Prospect, but from there you can go up to the 2/3/4/5 or even the C, or down to the Q/B, so not terrible.
