The landmark George B. and Susan Elkins House at 1375 Dean Street, the oldest house in Crown Heights North, has seen some troubling construction activity of late, according to our own Montrose Morris:

“They were issued a Stop Work Order for working with out permits. They were doing interior gutting and demo. Apparently, they ignored the SWO, and continued. Complaints to the LPC and DOB caused an inspection and a firm talking to. They stopped working [Tuesday]. They have to file with LPC before getting DOB permits, so there shouldn’t be any work going on until that happens.”

Last year the Crown Heights North Association was looking to buy the building, but it ultimately sold to a firm called “Real Properties Group,” according to a reader. The sale hasn’t been recorded in public records, though, and it’s not clear what the new owners are planning to do with the house. Let us know if you have any intel, and click through for a few close-ups of the current state of the exterior…

  1. actually, a lot of famous world landmarks are actually reproductions, some are second reproductions. Centrally located buildings tend to be blown up in wars and insurrections and such, if they are loved, they are often rebuilt exactly as before. Many of the best known landmarks in Paris for example were destroyed or damaged doing the Commune uprising of 1871. The famous Palladian basilica in Vicenza was rebuilt (with funds from the American AIA) after it and many other renaissance structures were blown to smithereens in 1945 by an allied airstrike. Ditto the palaces, opera house, and cathedral in Dresden. Old town Warsaw was entirely rebuilt after the Germans burned it to the ground. on and on.

    • Yes- but they weren’t deliberately destroyed to make way for a reproduction. They ewre destroyed by circumstances and not by preference. Had they not been destroyed there would be no need. And I’m guessing the care and quality put into rebuilding them is far above the level we will see with the Elkins house. And in reproducing that quality and care made them landmarks in their own right as well. But I don’t think anyone would have said, oh yeah- lets tear down the original so we can build a copy.

  2. My taxes will go to your health care when your smoking destroys your lungs. Yes- that’s as ludicrous as your statement. But then, you’re a smoking nazi so hyperbole is your weapon of choice.
