Alma Realty — the developers behind Astoria Cove on Hallets Point — revealed plans to transform the Apple Building (known for its “Apple Tag & Label” sign) at 30-30 Northern Boulevard. DNAinfo reports that plans call for a “retail and office complex that is a destination for the area, with a big box store and rooftop restaurants and lounges.” Alma will also build a brand new three-story building adjacent to the Apple Building, to hold retail space. They hope to bring in a big-box retail store, as well as apparel, home goods and department stores, gourmet markets, restaurants and financial institutions.

Alma purchased this building back in 2011 for $21,500,000. They will begin construction on the three-story retail space as soon as they secure a tenant. Construction on the Apple Building is expected to last until this fall.

  1. Before it sported the “Apple Tag” name on the building tower, this factory at 30-30 Northern Blvd. was the home of Louis Sherry products – a high end brand for various candy, fruit preserve, and ice cream products sold in NYC under the Louis Sherry name. A fluorescent sign with the words “Louis Sherry Ice Cream” remained on the tower lighting through the late 1970’s. Louis Sherry was himself a renowned restaurateur to the rich and famous of New York’s Gilded Age and beyond – and left that business with the advent of Prohibition.
