When we noticed a four-story home about to be built on the lot at 94 Prospect Place, we were unsure how the finished product would look considering the street is outside of the Park Slope Historic District. It looks like developers took advantage of that freedom: the design is totally modern, right down to the stoop. Do you like?
New Building in Pipeline for 94 Prospect Pl. [Brownstoner] GMAP
It is perfectly nice, given the current taboo among many architects about “copying” the past (something great architects have done since the year of the flood.) I don’t see why some lintels and a cornice would place a young architect in the Designers Hall of Shame. I agree w/ MM a cornice and some sort of texture would make it look less like a stripped down Italianate-style brownstone. But all in all it is better than most.
*Correction*
I should have stated above: “lament the loss of those golden brownstone days”
Tbur6;
Bold designs are not what Brownstone Brooklyn is all about these days. All we can do today is to lament those golden brownstone days so well documented on this site and to be “contextual”. Contextual means: a) ape a 19th century design (preferred method) or b) filler material, as you so well state above.
Get with the program, please.
Love it
the facade material looks like the new material used on lot of buildings these days…..some sort of laminate.
I guess will last -just wonder how easy to damage or how react to elements over few years.
Rob;
A drain pipe in the front is not necessary. The roof can slope towards the back wall, and the gutter and leader can be located there.
I think it is pretty okay. It isn’t quite what the new VW Beetle is to the old VW Beetle, but it isn’t too far off either. Much more than just a nod to its surroundings. It beats the hell out of the balcony-ridden miami vice crap that’s gone up elsewhere.
Sort of like the generic shapes an architect puts on a 3D model to show where structures are/will be.
you could totally just use one of those white metal drain pipes instead, but those are actually uglier than corny cornices.
