The rain on Saturday didn’t put a damper on the Develop Don’t Destroy fundraiser at the Hanson Place United Central Methodist Church in Fort Greene. Dan Zanes, the ex-Del Fuegos front man who’s reinvented himself in recent years as the Bard of Brooklyn, entertained 1,400 of his fans, young and old, to raise money for DDDB’s fight against Bruce Ratner’s proposed Atlantic Yards development. We’ll be interested to hear from people in the audience about the non-entertainment portion of the event. Were there many speeches other than Buscemi?

  1. The event on Saturday was extremely exciting. I was working the Dan Zanes merch table, and the Zanes fans were totally on board with the DDDb message.

It really felt like the pro-community/anti-Ratner movement is reaching a new height. I spoke to people from Queens who felt that it was their personal responsibility to fight for a supposedly Brooklyn issue.

This was grassroots organizing at its best. And I’d like to thank Dan Zanes and all the others who came out and stood up for democratic transparency. Cock-a-doodle-doodle-doo all around the kitchen!

  2. Yo “gde,” sorry if I wasn’t clear. My point was that the Zanes concert was a BIG step up from the bake sales and the pass-the-bucket or pay-what-you-think-we’re-worth events.

The fact that DDDB can logistically pull off a concert like that, shows that they have the organizing muscle to handle bigger events and raise larger pots of dough.

  3. Wow, 17K? It’s probably about 17K more than DDDB makes at their bake sales.

And here I thought Brooklyn was going to beat back Ratner one cupcake at a time.

    Other speeches:
Danny Z. made a little speech about how he thought it was a done deal until he started to pay attention. Rubi Theater reminded everyone to support public school teachers (hey dog, money for schools not stadiums!).

  4. Thanks, adn, for your post. I brought my two year old and we had a great time.
I can’t believe anyone would criticize Dan Zanes for such a thoughtful and generous action as to support this cause.
    Thank you Dan!
And money is not what will stop this hideous and corrupt project from being built. It will be stopped when politicians and developers who live in Manhattan realize that people in Brooklyn vote and that we won’t roll over and play dead. That’s exactly what that concert was about.

  5. Gee, not even one critic of the event willing to actually identify himself? What a surprise! Could you all actually be Joe DePlasco?

You can deride DDDB’s efforts all you want while hiding behind your cowardly anonymity, but you better “Catch that Train” of opposition to “Atlantic Yards” soon or you’re going to be left behind with the dwindling handful of paid Ratner supporters ruing its demise.

And by the way, the strategy of trying to demoralize us by belittling our fundraisers and touting Ratner’s zillions? Better try a new tune.
