The double-wide brownstone walk-up at 940-942 Fulton Street has long been a blight on this block between St. James Place and Cambridge Place. The rundown building was finally sold last year for $855,000. At the end of last week, a scaffolding went up, as per this DOB permit. There’s no other information online about the plans for the building and we weren’t able to reach the developer (who appears to be a contractor) by phone. But even a crappy renovation of this place could have big ramifications for a stretch of Fulton Street that can use all the help it can get, especially since this place has two empty storefronts right now. Activate, activate! GMAP DOB

  1. Noooo, no bakeries. Don’t compete with Michael Allen or the Essential Cakes people. Those places are both great. MORE DECENT COFFEE, however, would be good. The Outpost is just far enough off my beaten path that I go to Provisions instead, which isn’t any closer.

  2. Wasder, once the retail crosses a certain density threshold on these blocks, it should take off. the train lines there is a major advantage as far as generating the foot traffic. I think a non-foo foo fancy bakery would do very very well there – mass appeal and I suspect there’s some nice pent-up demand for that

  3. M4L–no retraction necessary. I know what you are saying. I do think prices reflect that somewhat but maybe not as much as you think they ought to. Personally I walk all the time up to the Clinton Ave end of the neighborhood and it doesn’t feel like too much of hardship but there is no doubt that having some closer to home retail like this would make my corner of the neighborhood a bit more inviting.

It seems to me that the BID, despite its rocky rollout, is already making a positive difference here and with the transit convenience of Fulton I see upside for an eventual commercial upgrade of the avenue.

  4. “Anyone have any more info on the “Grand Avenue Bar & Grill” that the NYT Local said was granted a liquor license. Set to open on Grand between Fulton and Putnam, at the triangle. Any news on when or more details?”

Whoa–I never heard anything about this. A regular old normal bar in this neck of the woods would be such a revelation. This gets my “panties” moist.

  5. I’m subletting my apartment around the corner on St James Place. Every time I pass through the neighborhood I’m amazed at the rapid change on Fulton. ‘member the days when traffic was one-way on this stretch of Fulton? That was miserable.
