Facade Watch: 221 Washington Avenue
Seven months after rebuilding began, Clinton Hill’s 221 Washington is now sporting a brand-new facade. The back story: This was once a fish-shingled home, much like its neighbor to the right, before the property’s owner began a major overhaul that involved removing its original facade and roof. The construction has been interesting to follow, and we’ve been waiting to see how the facade would turn out for a few months now. And here it is! Like what they’ve done with it?

Very nice, in a San Francisco painted-lady way. I hope they go for a turquoise and mauve cornice.
They blew it with the door.
it’s probably a ton cheaper and faster to build than to restore that original bldg which was crappy (condition & layout)
looks pretty contextual to me.
looks great – you can still build/reno a classy building in the city after all I guess.
I agree with NH, why bother?
Hopefully the cornice and permanent front door will pull it together a bit.
I think it looks nice, but I wish the upper single windows lined up with the doorway….and the door should be centered or a double door, no?
Unique, but still contextual. I might withhold final judgment until I know what the cornice will look like.
Maybe it looks better in person, but my reaction is: why bother? The house to the right looks so much better. Even if they had a reason why they couldn’t restore and needed to rebuild, they should have just copied the original or the one next door.
I hope the front door is temporary and they’re going to put in a side-light.
