This is the first time we’ve seen 950 St. Johns Place, so we can’t comment on how quickly it’s been progressing. But it looks like the windows are in and the side facade is all finished. According to DOB permits this will be a six-story building with six units. The development is between New York Avenue and Brooklyn Avenue, and is in an area currently calendered to be landmarked. 1. When the owner of this building bought the property, it was a three story house like next door. He told the next door neighbor that he was only going to do a “little renovation” to the house. Before you know it, a 6 story condobox is going up. That was after parking heavy earth moving vehicles on the lawn and other fun stuff. This towers over anything else on this end of the block, and certainly would not be allowed if this block had been landmarked when Crown Heights North phase 1 was landmarked, ending only 3 blocks away. This block was in the original over-all proposed landmarked district. It’s had several SWO’s and has been stalled for years. I think they started it in 2007, the same year we got landmarked. The only thing that makes it less horrible than it is is the fact that it is at the end of the row, not in the middle. It’s main purpose now is as a poster child for what can happen to a low scale residential neighborhood of historic buildings when no one is watching the store.
