We remember scratching our head as we’d drive by this building on the BQE, wonder who was going to pony up for those views. At that stage, when it was nothing more than cinderblocks, we assumed it was going to be another complete sh!t sandwich of a building. And while we still can’t imagine who’s going to live here or why the windows aren’t biggger, we have to say we kinda like the fact that the architect, who’s none other than Robert Scarano, decided to have a little fun and give this otherwise drab stretch a splash of color. The 10-unit residential building looks more like something that would spring up in an outer neighborhood of a European city. But at least it’s not a Fedders special. It also looks mezzanine-free. One question for Scarano or any other architects reading this string: Why, if you were going to have at least one wall without any windows, wouldn’t you make it the wall facing the highway? Why not instead make that the dead wall and have windows on the other three? Just curious.
We’re just off the plane from Berlin but had to respond..what David and many others keep neglecting is that CONTEXT plays a huge role in our opinion of a building…David draws the simplistic conclusion that we’re somehow saying that we like this building better than the one on State Street. all we said (or meant to say, at least) was that the one on State is completely disrespectful of the block its on and this building, located right next to the BQE, at least isn’t the color of all the exhaust fumes that its inhabitants will be forced to inhale.
this country is digusting me more and more every day. just read today that by the year 2040, 75% of americans will be overweight. the list goes on and on.
and i’ll stop whoever in their tracks who says…go move to europe. i’m thinkin about it already, thanks…
you’re right david – they idea of having metal detectors at SCHOOL entrances would be astounding to them. We’ve become brutalized here.
Fugly with a capital FUG, but it has parking!
Yeah 12:29 those Europeans are so civilized (and they raise their kids better).
I don’t get you brownstoner. The last Scarano building was nice and you hated it. This one is beyond fugly and you like it?!
I’m a BIG fan of Scarano, but this building looks like crap, cheap as hell windows and a/c units.
hello asthma
it’s also probably difficult when anything brownstoner writes is ripped apart by some of the most infantile posters imagineable. he likes it, you hate it. you like it, he hates it.
it’s like a game amongst 4 year olds.
perhaps mr. b has varied tastes that don’t fit into such a specific box like most of you seem to define not only your architectural tastes by, but your lives as well.
ever heard of being a little open-minded? that’s why people in europe have more civilized lifestyles. they can live amongst buildings like the above and NOT feel like the sky is falling!!!!
