936fult0707.jpgEvidently the aluminum windows that we complained about at 936 Fulton Street are not bothering buyers. When we walked past on Sunday during the conversion project’s first showing, we noticed a couple clusters of youngish-looking people standing around outside. They were doing more than standing around: The building’s website Fulton on Clinton shows that six out of the 11 units are already in contract! We’re hoping somebody who’s been on the inside can explain what the frenzy is about. Also, according to a reader who contacted the broker, they’ve gotten inquiries from both a bank and a “large coffee house in Fort Greene” about the commercial space. We shall see. This news is certainly welcome for Fulton Street (and the person trying to sell the building next door).

  1. “Those of you who are moving to Brooklyn like someone lit a fire under your ass and are upset about living in the hood, why not go live in the lighter parts of Bklyn instead, Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge, Mill Basin?”

Who said that anyone is upset about living in the hood? I think the you’re mischaracterizing the issue at hand. In any event, I would say that the shifting demographic trends clearly indicate that many people actually want to live in the beautiful brownstone neighborhoods east of Flatbush Avenue (FG, CH, BS, PH, CHN and PLG) that are predominantly black and all flourishing.

I don’t know who you are (Mos Def Wannabe or whatever), but since discovering this board a few days ago, you clearly show that you have issues with race, your own as well as with whites. Get over it brah. Life is rough but you reap what you sow. Don’t like the hand that you were dealt? Get a new hand. Whatever you do, stop bitch’n and moan’n about whites living in the hood. Your time would be better spent raising the level of your own game and getting your own piece of the pie. Sorry brah. Don’t meant to call you out like that in public but your blatant trolling over the past few days is not only annoying but it’s also very embarrassing.

  2. If it was one of two pics, then it’s really not a big deal. But when you take 20 photos that tells me that you’re trying to capture the true essence of the neighborhood for would-be buyers. If that is indeed the case then the marketing promotion misrepresents the community in ways that are truly egregious and unacceptable.

  5. 5:16pm here. So we are clear I’m black too and I own multiple brownstones in the area, as do many of my friends who also happen to be black. In addition, I’m very supportive of gentrification no matter the race of the new entrants. I’m all about taking the nabe to new heights.

My issue with the promotion is that it doesn’t attempt to celebrate the greatest characteristic with respect to Clinton Hill – it’s diversity. The marketing promotion deliberately attempts to hide the fact that Clinton Hill has black people. Now anyone who is at all familiar with Clinton Hill or Fort Greene can tell you that there are a slew of proud black urban professionals (buppies) who live in the nabe and any one of those photographs could’ve captured a number of black families casually strolling through the neighborhood or park, eating at their favorite cafe or restaurant, and simply enjoying their fabulous community with family and friends. I understand that this is about the marketing of condos to a specific target group so I’m not suggesting that the sponsor includes shots of the local hoodrats on the corner. However, does including shots of functional black families who live in the community really going to turn potential white buyers away? I would love to hear the response of those in advertising/marketing on this issue.

  6. Response to 5:16. I absolutely agree with your sentiment. I also noticed that but honestly I feel like every broker does the same thing. And it’s no wonder, reading sites like this one the garbage that comes out of people’s keyboards. Sometimes totally blatant racism, sometimes covert “um well the neighborhood is kind of well you know um gee how shall i say dark”. The interesting thing about NYC is that every neighborhod holds surprises. I’ve lived in the area for 5 years (i’m black so we’re clear) and the neighborhood has really improved not because its whiter but because people of all races are taking more pride in their homes and community. What sucks is that people sometimes don’t take that pride until white people start coming. Its like we don’t know what we have til gentrification steps in and we can’t afford to buy there anymore. If you want to stop “gentrification” as in less black people, buy something when you get the chance, but “genetrification” as in keeping the area clean and supporting new businesses I love it!

  7. Ya, I saw it too, all white people on the website, pretty funny…seems reality won’t shake the gift money out of mommy and daddy. Forget about the fears of the pigment challenged, buy and live in the best neighborhood in the city. Also the MET has beer.

  8. Hey Mr. B, did you check out the FultonOnClinton website for this condo project? Did you click on the photo gallery? If not, then you should. There you will find a gallery of photos depicting life in Clinton Hill and of 30+ people who were photographed not a single person is black! Wow! Talk about misleading marketing! Clinton Hill is about 60% black and that stretch of Fulton would make you think that that number is closer to 95%. Now I’m all for gentrification but lets be realistic and honest about the current state of affairs in the hood. This is Clinton Hill – not Middlebury, Vermont!
