Boerum Hill’s 420 State Street, which was a vacant lot as of last March, has arrived. (Not without its share of problems, though.) There was concern the new home, which is sporting quite the modern design, was exceeding its footprint. Despite a few SWOs, it looks pretty close to complete. What do you make of the final outcome?

  1. to architect66: please look at the house of the day, on Park Place.
that house has a great bay on the front facade AND windows on the end bay as well.
It is a beautiful, inviting, not-allergic-to-the-environment sort of house that most people love.
This on the other hand looks like a building where the CAT Scan machines and the X-ray equipment take up the right half of the institution.

  2. I root for any project that attempts to break the mold, and I think that this one does with some success. If you look carefully, there is about the same amount of glazing in the facade of this building as there is in a typical 3-windowed brownstone. It’s just a different distribution.

I’m not sure I have the orientation correct, but I think that the west(?)facing bay will bring in a bit of rosy evening light – a nice feature.

I don’t know how someone can look at a building from the outside and judge whether there are too many, or too few, windows. The interior spaces make all the difference. Personally, I think that a very large window on the front of a townhouse is an excellent way to bring light and a sense spatial connection to the deeper interior parts of the house.

Also, agree with ty about the roof deck.
