  1. squaredrive: it’s not a question of justification; this is war; there are any number of “unjustifable” actions on both sides.

    But I cannot understand the outrage of people who cannot understand of outrage of civilians subject to the brutality of a war with no reason, no end and uncontrolled actions by quasi-civilians.

    In this country, we’re practically getting mob actions because of a perceived “socialistic” president. Imagine what would happen if we were colonized.

  2. No, benson/dibs, you’re willfully ignoring real-world, on-the-ground conditions by applying “normal” “civilized” rules.

    Of course in a law-abiding world, the actions of one cannot be a cause for punishment of another. However, that’s like saying in war you’d only attack the particular soldiers who have already killed your own. Blackwater operatives are uncontrolled, unmanaged loose cannon who have the authority of soldiers. Therefore, in an insane world, insane rules do apply. Those operatives paid for the sins of the group.

    While never minimizing the tragedy of their deaths, think about the *thousands* of Iraqi civilians who’ve died and been maimed by our actions, (including such mundane things like barreling through civilian marketplaces), a figure hidden from our eyes by most our media.

  3. “Talk about ignoring context: Blackwater operatives have been implicated in torture, rape, murder and general disdain towards the “natives”. And they’re immune from punishment (thanks to Cheney). Whether or not it’s true the populace cheered, I’d wager you’d be the first to cheer if you and yours were subjected to this treatment.”

    I almost choked on my cheerios when i read this. You seem to be suggesting that the blackwater killings and celebration thereafter were justified?

  4. I dunno —sounds like the criticism of the charges is something orchestrated by some rightwing group(s) trying to make some political hay. especially this line –
    “Where is justice; clearly not to be found
    in the current world of a left-of-centre President and
    Commander-in-Chief” and line about ‘mosquito bite’.

    Why no link to NYTimes article on Boymelgreen…perhaps Mr. B. is doing a thread later.

  5. The bike lane on Henry. Parking is such a problem in that area why would they take parking away to have a bike lane. I ride a bike, and ride in the street, what is the problem.

    Something really needs to be done in Brooklyn to alleviate the parking problems we have here.

  6. CMU;

    Your post demonstrates exactly why there is an uproar about this court-martial.

    Your begin your post with the following paragraph:

    “Talk about ignoring context: Blackwater operatives have been implicated in torture, rape, murder and general disdain towards the “natives”. And they’re immune from punishment (thanks to Cheney). Whether or not it’s true the populace cheered, I’d wager you’d be the first to cheer if you and yours were subjected to this treatment.”

    You say not a word about what THESE MEN are alleged to have done, but talk about the overall context and the political situation. You tip the hand of those who are pursuing this prosecution: they are doing so for diplomatic and political reasons, not because of the alleged actual offenses.
