Garden Cafe Goes On the Market
Eater reports that Garden Cafe, a foodie favorite in Prospect Heights and “successful business for 20-plus years,” is now listed on Craigslist.
Manhattan’s Cheyenne Diner Will Relocate to Red Hook
“The diner will get perched on a platform on Reed Street, between Van Brunt and Conover streets, to prop it up for views of the Upper New York Bay. Not bad for a joint that had been stuck on Ninth Avenue and 33rd Street in Gaphattan… plans also call for on-site parking and an outdoor movie screen with a spring 2009 opening.” [The Brooklyn Paper]

After the jump: A highly respected coffee roaster moves to Carroll Gardens, the best picnic spots in Brooklyn, and more info on Heath Ledger’s posthumous bar and bistro…
Respected Roaster Moves to Brooklyn
“Duane Sorenson, who owns Stumptown Coffee Roasters, based in Portland, Ore., packed up a U-Haul last month and moved to Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, just a short hop from the coffee roastery he will soon open in Red Hook… Mr. Sorenson is one of the people who have remade the coffee business, searching the world for the best beans, roasting them with exquisite attention and preparing them to order at his six cafes in Portland and Seattle, which will remain open while he is in New York.” [NY Times]
Dreamy Picnic Spots
Brooklyn Based lists 5 of the borough’s best picnic locales along with nearby shops to pick up portable snacks. For a cheap date, all you need to bring is a blanket.
Coming Soon: BrightSide
The corner of Lorimer and Bedford, Greenpoint
“Heath Ledger’s bar, which, according to Down by the Hipster, had the working name Five Leaves, will be called BrightSide when it opens later this summer… Says co-owner Jud Longell, ‘Heath was very, very into it. He drew the floor plans and thought of the name, BrightSide, because it’s on the bright side of McCarren Park.’ When the venue opens, there will be a family table, per Ledger’s wishes, and a chessboard engraved into one of the tables — a nod to the actor’s love of the game.” [Grub Street]
The Cafe Carcioffo thread was quickly “locked down” by the Chowhound (chow.com) administrators. They no longer allow posters to discuss anything other than food. Chowhound was bought by CNET which was then bought by CBS. So although Chowhound is still useful, you will get censored if you talk about non-food gossip. This also applies to the Blue Pig and etc. credit card fraud situation in Brooklyn Heights. No fun!
Sad. The Garden Cafe is the only reason I go to Prospect Heights.
