  1. Spare me the self-stroking BXgirl. I have to deal with way too many over-educated over-paid under-brained people at work, please don’t subject me to that same crap here.

I don’t have the patience to put together a scholarly piece for you on this subject. Mindless drones referencing the story about the dog they read on some blog every time this artist is a subject doesn’t deserve the effort.

Once you’re done being impressed with yourself you should give some thought to whether ariculate stupidity is any less stupid then unarticulate stupidity.

Nice about face by the way.

  2. I’m not taking a position on either side – I’m just interested in the points of discussion.

Whether you are for or against something is entirely your privilege. Whether you can impose that view though is another matter.

Society defines it’s own moralities by laws. You want to live in our society then you have to obey our laws. i’m pretty sure that what Mr Otterness did is against the law and therefore the morality of the society that he is living in should judge him for that.

  3. What’s your definition of morality? Don’t you think being against cruelty and suffering is a “morality” as opposed to a universal socializing principle? We’re not talking killing to survive- we’re talking gratuitious cruelty, done to maximize pain and discomfort. If society operated on the idea no one should impose their morality on anyone else, we wouldn’t be a society- we’d still be living in little groups, hunting and gathering.

  4. oops, denton- make that “self-serving” apology.

Considering that Otterness seems to have never put his regret into any kind of action- like working against animal abuse or donating money to shelters- I can’t credit him with much sincerity.

  5. denton- thank, yes. Yours was classier and didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know.

It doesn’t excuse anything-this guy merely apologized (where does the profusely come from?) and has not taken one iota of responsibility.

Can anyone verify that he has since contributed one dime to an animal shelter or worked to stop animal abuse? If you can show me that, I’d be much more forgiving- still doesn’t mean I think he’s a great artist by any stretch. His work is cute and sly and comes out of the same shallow character that adopted and shot a dog so he could film it suffering to death.

So you think that because shelters kill animals and rapists get out with short sentences we should just look the other way because, hey Tommy’s an “artist” and it was 30 years ago? That makes him a better person now? And yes, murderers sometimes do get a second chance but as you and I both know circumstances have a lot to do with that.

You would have to abe a pretty cold, bloodless human being to do what Otterness did. Maybe you’re used to taking your animals to a nice clean vet’s office for euthanasia. But having seen animals suffer and die painfully, I will tell you yet again, any person capable of adopting an animal, then taking it home to shoot it and watch it die while you film it isn’t much of a human being. 30 years and a “profuse” apology made only to salvage your reputation doesn’t change what you are.

  6. Hey bxgirl, I’ll try and give you a classy response, ok? lol

We own a dog and a cat, so we certainly are not in favor of animal abuse or murder. And what he did was reprehensible, without a doubt.

At the same time, let’s put it in perspective.

    a. In this country we kill, in shelters, almost 600 dogs per HOUR, that’s every hour, ever day, and every week, 24/7. 5 million dogs a year.

    b. He was twenty-five when he did it, and has apologized profusely.

    c. This was over thirty years ago. The average time served for homicide of a HUMAN in this country is less than six years, and the average time served for rape is under five and a half years. But when they get out we’re supposed to take into consideration that they’ve ‘paid their debt to society’ and give them a second chance.

If we can give a murderer a second chance, surely we can extend that here.
