Update: The 713 Deli has actually been closed for a while so maybe the folks opening the new place at 707 Fulton are actually business geniuses and it’s our commentary that’s superfluous!
I was just going say I guess you didn’t go to business school (and the deli owners have?). The “ice cream cart on the beach” scenario is 101.
Location theory of economics says that vendors cluster for minimal differentiation. The textbook example is ice cream vendors on a beach. It’s why we have theater districts, etc. (anyone remember the radio district?). Its also why candidates tend to track towards the middle in a general election – you are trying to cut off your competition from half the market.
That’s the theory at least.
Theres another New superfluous bodega opening in Williamsburg on Graham ave. & Conselyea conveniently located across the street from another 24 hour bodega and on a block with 2 others!! WTF?! (This also used to a Ralph’s Ices which was awesome .. so sad)
What’s the deal with pet food stores? There are more kids than dogs around here yet I don’t see the area awash with kids stores. There are at least 4 pet food stores, and another one is opening on DeKalb where Malchijah Hats just closed up shop. I mean I HAVE a dog and I have yet to need a $35 bag of lamb and rice and I buy a leash about once every 5 years.
By the way, I live off Cortelyou Road and there are, I think, five or six 99cent stores within an 1/2 mile or so. They are all open and doing business and some of them are very *recent* additions. Actually, the newest one is the best.
Lifer – do you think they’ll sell weed there? Let me know.
HA FSRG! that’s my bodega (i go to the dirty one), not the cleaner one. not sure why. i think cuz it’s closer when you get out of the stop actually. however i think i might switch as the bodega i go to gives people a tab, but when i asked for one they told me no, and im a regular customer there for two years! lol
*rob*
another weed spot? money laundering?
4th Ave just south of 9th Street station, same deal. I’ve also noticed how often in the Slope someone puts a business right into the storefront where the same business failed. Right now, a Japanese restaurant is going in on 7th Ave near 4th Street where a Japanese restaurant recently closed. This sort of thing happens all the time.
