  1. “as for cable-so what? Should she stare at the four walls all the time? ”

Only an idiot would do that. The library is free, full of books, and DVDs (including new releases). You can also rent movies from the Blockbuster Kiosk at Duane Reade for $1 a day. Lots of entertainment options much cheaper than cable.

  2. newslouthsloper- I have been working freelance in graphic art and design for quite a few years. It ain’t just about being fun and creative- this is work. It’s what I do and its what I do well. I realize most people on b’stoner love to look down on arts and the humanities but it happens to be a necessary and integral part of communication and society. Some of us do it better than others- there are loads of grads, the majority of whom have no creative spark but great technique.

So you’re a cpa. There are millions of cpas out there too. And lawyers. And financiers. At least I love what I do.

  3. “I see jobs in my field where they expect you to be expert in graphic art and design. all Adobe programs, web mastering, and have administrative level responsibilities and they offer 10-15 $ an hour.”

Thats because these creative type jobs are limited and the supply of Graphic Design graduates is extremely high. Colleges are graduating hundreds of thousands of them every year. Its great that you want to work in something fun and creative – but so do millions of other people – Supply and Demand.

If I had my way I would have been working as a video game designer or tester. Fortuantely, becoming a CPA was a more practical career path and far more lucrative – I play video games on weekends 🙂

  4. You can opt to pay taxes out of your unemployment- I did. But the real point of the article (which is, as ENY said, typical b.s. from the Post) is that jobs pay very little. Sorry novanglas but try to find a job these days and look at what they offer- it’s garbage. I see jobs in my field where they expect you to be expert in graphic art and design. all Adobe programs, web mastering, and have administrative level responsibilities and they offer 10-15 $ an hour.

What she said is the reality- there are jobs out there- but you can’t live on what you earn. And I am not talking about eating out several times a week. I’m talking about putting food in your fridge.

She has a cell phone, but no landline. I have both- neither are great plans but if you looking for work you need them and the internet. Those are necessities. as for cable-so what? Should she stare at the four walls all the time? To her credit she took the crap job and is doing it.
