babeland-sign-0608.jpgAn article in the Daily News talks about how the Park Slope branch of Toys in Babeland will cater to the neighborhood’s demographic, which apparently includes a lot of moms with babies. The Bergen Street sex-toy shop, which is opening tomorrow, will have a changing table in the bathroom, and its owner intends to run workshops for new moms. In addition, the store won’t display erotic toys in its window. The article’s writer found a couple people who said they’re opposed to Babeland opening in the Slope (“I don’t think it’s a good idea. There are so many kids in the neighborhood,” said one), but Babeland’s owner says she’s mostly gotten positive feedback about the biz. And the owner of maternity shop Bump, also on Bergen Street, says her store isn’t necessarily so different from Babeland. “We’re in the maternity business, so we’re in the business of sex, too,” she said. “One leads to the other.”

  1. So freakin excited about this store opening. It’s just what Park Slope needs.

I think the notion that in the age of Sex and the City (and most women I know giving out BJ’s as if they are handshakes), not that many folks are ashamed to go and buy themselves a little toy. Think how many women will go here to buy presents for their still single Manhattan gal pals. Or the baskets to be made for the best friend’s shower. Or all the freakin lezzies who don’t give two rats asses about who sees them go inside to buy their gallon drums of vegan lube.

The woman in the picture runs a very good business. I’ve been to the stores in Seattle and in Soho. No way she didn’t do some serious research before opening this location.

  2. To guest at 10:30. I beleive that TIB was actually started by a lesbian couple, and as customer of their SOHO store, I can tell you they make no judgements. It’s all there. It’s tastefully done, and there’s something for everybody.

  3. You plainly don’t live in Park Slope or visit there, 10:13.

The typical Park Slope mom goes to yoga and she is fit. It’s the moms who can’t afford a babysitter or nanny who don’t exercise. Not the more privileged Park Slope moms. I don’t live there anymore and I’m not a fan of the mom-culture there either, but you’re an idiot, 10:13.

However I don’t think a sex toy shop will do well there. The moms wouldn’t want their neighbors or the other moms from PS 321 seeing them walk in or out that place. Remember it’s Brooklyn, it’s a smallish neighborhood, you run into people you know on the sidewalks ALL the time. If this were in Manhattan it’s a one in a million chance you see someone you know as you exit the sex shop. In Park Slope it’s one in ten.

  4. 10:13 – as opposed to moms in other neighborhoods who haven’t had kids? really, if you’re going to troll, at least do it right. maybe some kegels would help tighten your flaccid post!
