Step Inside Some Brooklyn Architectural Treasures During Sacred Sites Weekend

If you have wanted an excuse to wander inside some of New York’s dazzling houses of worship, the 13th annual Sacred Sites Open House this month will give you the opportunity.

The annual celebration of architecture by the New York Landmark Conservancy will have 100 sacred sites open across the state for tours and special programs on Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21. This year, in honor of the organization’s anniversary, the theme is “50 Years of Sacred Sites.”

While you can hit the road and check out sites upstate, closer to home 10 Brooklyn houses of worship are participating. A number are offering self-guided tours including the Moslem Mosque in Williamsburg, Beth Shalom v’Emeth Reform Temple in Prospect Park South, and Old First Reformed Church in Park Slope. For a guided tour experience, you can visit the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian in Fort Greene, among others.

The days and hours for the free programs vary with each location and some require registration. You can check out the full list of participating sites online.
