As promised, Pier 6, the second piece of the Brooklyn Bridge Park puzzle, opened this past weekend. In a city where playgrounds tend to be on the smaller side, this 1.6-acre layout offers just about anything a kid could ever dream of. There is a water park with fountains and streams, a 6,000-square-foot sandbox, slides (including some that looked two stories high), and an area known as “Swing Valley,” a hilly area complete with gigantic rope swings. The park is surrounded by a wide bikeway and promenade, and there is also a dog run. Eventually, the park will be getting volleyball courts, more lawn area, and a restaurant. It’s a pretty impressive accomplishment, and great to see that much life brought to that end of Atlantic.

Think I’ll take a coffee break and go get some good ol’ swingset hands!
ENY, I’ll be happy to go to Six Flags and leave this water park entirely to the kids just as soon as they build one on a pier 2 blocks from my house!!
“Why can’t they create ‘play areas’ with water, swings and slides for adults?”
“They have. It’s called Six Flags.”
ooooh yeah.
so let’s charge kids to enter pier 6 play areas.
Hiya Noki!! 😉
“cgar, try being my size in an airplane!”
LMAO, Denton!
Biff, I like my solution: go with friends with kids!! As I said, I WOULD feel a little creepy hanging out there alone . . . though I would NOT be against making a quick pass through the water park on a hot day just to cool off, right Noki???
And, Biff, yes, I feel sorry for that little park on State, too. Sprinklers were going full force on my way home and no one was in there. And I believe there are “no unaccompanied adults” and “no dogs” signs there, too, both of which I’ve ignored there recently.

Is this guy with, what, like 20 comments really THAT pissed off about not being able to sit on a kiddie swing that is 20 minutes from the nearest subway?
Is it possible to feel sorry for a playground? I now feel empathy towards that cute little one at State Street and Columbia Place that is already underutilized. Rob, it has sprinklers, so you can frolic there and have them all to yourself! Nobody will be around to enforce the no adults without kids rule. Everybody will be at Pier 6.
For the record, pretty much EVERY playground I’ve seen in NYC has the same sign prohibiting adults without children.
Not sure if the complainers here realize that. It’s not at all unique to the Pier 6 play areas.
i was there Saturday and it is so cool! kids running around squealing all over the place. so much fun.
one boy was asked by his parents when leaving the water park whether he wanted to go to the sand park and he said “YES” with the most enthusiasm I’ve seen from anyone in a long time.
i was hanging out in the swings area for a while and it never occurred to me that you’re not supposed to go in if you dont have a kid with you. other childless people there too.
really a great place.
