Another one bites the dust: after yesterday’s post about La Taqueria getting slapped with a big yellow DOH sticker, a commenter noted Ozzie’s on 5th Avenue suffered a similar fate. We couldn’t find their “grade” on The Department of Health’s restaurant search engine but their 7th Avenue location received an A. A sign on Ozzie’s door apologizes for the inconvenience and says, “Be assured that we are working hard on reopening as soon as possible.”

  1. 11217,

Because I like it there. When I moved here my mom wanted a bagel one morning as I unpacked and she went there and got one. It was the first cafe I went to in New York, and I have a soft spot for it. I’m well aware of Cafe Regular, I go there once to my three visits to Ozzie’s. They have the NY and London Review of Books! I have a bottle of mineral water last time still in my fridge.

But I’m not a foodie, I’m sentimental and go where sentiment leads me. You’d never be caught dead in my local bar either. But these places are home to me, “third places,” and that’s why.

  2. Infinite,

Why in the world do you go to Ozzie’s on 7th? The coffee is horrendous. Cute place, but go around the corner (literally) to Cafe Regular Du Nord if you want a good cup of coffee. A great cup, actually. La Colombe, to be exact.

It’s right off 7th on Berkeley Place.

  3. They resent it if you don’t have a small bill t pay for your order.

I go to the 7th Ave. Ozzie’s all the time. Never seen a hint of filth. It’s old, but not dirty. This place the same. The advantage of here is the people watching on 5th.

Tea Lounge often has fruit flies.

  4. it IS a big place, but that’s kind of nice. the week or two where i didnt have a computer i had id have to go in there to use their computers. it’s nice not having someone sitting too close to you and having some breathing room.

there’s a bit of tomfoolery that goes down when you order iced coffee from them. this happened THREE times to me. i didnt say anything, i just stopped buying iced coffee from there. they raised the prices of their iced coffee.. but they have two options 16 oz and 20 oz. every time i asked for a large they give it to me in the 16 ounce cup but charge me for the 20 oz. very hard to tell if it was on purpose or cuz the “barista” was just stoned.

    *rob*

  5. Ozzie’s on 5th always struck me as an incredibly half-assed use of prime space. It’s a half block of storefront, great location, great light, nothing going on inside and kind of dirty. Maybe this will incent them to sub-lease. You could fit three great places in there.
