In “Dreams From My Father,” Barack Obama wrote that he had several family members who had lived their entire lives in Nairobi and considered it to be their home. But it wasn’t really their true home, since the Obama family came from the a village on the shores of Lake Victoria. They called that village “home squared,” which perfectly captures my feelings about Brooklyn (my “home” of seven years – ten years in NYC), and San Diego (first 18 years of my life – definitely “home squared”). I would imagine there are some others here who feel the same way.
ENY and vinca, I love your reminiscing about growing up in Brooklyn. Please keep it up. Not to mention this delicious re-write in the making:
“One of the guys got a Vaseline jar top and spent like a week filling it with wax. It must have weighed a pound or two. He’d whip it out whenever he didn’t want his cap to get bumped.”
“BRG, trust me, it’s really really really good quality Turkish food and cheap!”
Why am I drawing a blank on this place? I was hired to write restaurant reviews for a few places in brooklyn, several on Coney Island Avenue. A couple of weeks ago, Hubby and I were there eating at the restaurants. We ate at sooo many, but yet this one is escaping me. I have to go back to my notes.
Not sure I ate at this one, as I love turkish and would remember.
“whether bottlecaps should or should not be filled when playing Skelly.”
In my neighborhood, it was optional, subject to majority rule of the players. But almost all of us did it, so it was pretty much a given that we’d vote for “filled.” We’d collect cps of various sizes and use them in specific situations. One of the guys got a Vaseline jar top and spent like a week filling it with wax. It must have weighed a pound or two. He’d whip it out whenever he didn’t want his cap to get bumped.
“Spaldeen v. a Pensy Pinky”
We’d nly use Spaldeens. Never hears of a Pensy Pinksy. We didn’t have them in ENY, I guess.
Man, who’s going to stir the pot now that 11217 is outta here (btw, I place 5% odds that being true)? Reading ESPN.com is really bad for me now – no NYC / NJ team is well currently.
Damn Biff, you got me checking my spelling, grammar, word selection,…..
Thank you for your posts in the ‘other’ thread BRG and mopar, much appreciated. : )

M4L, sorry, I promise to give you a free pass for the rest of the day, my friend.
