What, basta, in Italian, means “enough.”
Finito, also in Italian, means “finished, the end.” Basta finito is basically, ’nuff said. Nothing more.
Trust me, if I was going to curse you out, I can do it quite well in English, not to mention a couple other languages. Kindly look it up next time, instead of assuming that I’m like you, and am looking for an easy way to insult someone.
Fine, let me know for what day next week and I am down. I guess we have to exchange emails at some point to get this out of the OT. I can even bring the meat if we can locate a grill (oy vey I am just waiting for the re-writes on that one).
What, I will even grant you that some, or even all, of that information is true. So what, really? It makes sense that the early peoples of the world, who undisputedly came from the African continent, spread across the world to become the various peoples of the earth. Any high school student who paid attentions during genetics week can affirm that over the centuries, those people gradually changed into the racial groups we have today, due to the environments they lived in, and the ebb and flow of genetic traits being accepted and rejected into the gene pool, by environments, conditions and other factors .
And we know now that many early peoples travelled and traded much farther afield than we previously gave credit for. Therefore, you find evidence of black people in parts of Mexico and South America well before the Spanish brought slaves to the area. You find various other peoples in places not thought visited, until evidence was found to the contrary. Everyone knows the Native American peoples are the decendants of Asian peoples who migrated across the Russian steppes over to North America.
I understand the need for pride in proving that our Negroid African ancestors were not just savages without brains or a history, a slave race for centuries of our betters. I understand the need for websites and books, to prove that everyone from Ramses to Jesus to Beethoven was black. I celebrate the books that show that many of the great inventions of our times were invented by black people who got no credit, no fame or fortune, and were often ripped off by people who are now accredited for their hard work. It is frustrating, maddening and unfair to have nothing but the works of conquering Europeans made to be the entirety of history. I HEAR YOU!
But I see no sense in being like those guys in Times Square with the absurd robes on, insisting that the 12 Tribes of Israel are 12 island nations in the Caribbean. Nonsensical history is worse than inaccurate history. Putting up a website with a couple of statues to prove that the early Chinese were black no more proves that than some neo-Nazi website with a couple of pictures of monkeys and black people is true. Our racial honor is neither advanced nor diminished by admitting or celebrating the accomplishments of others. The truths taught by Jesus, for example, are great truths whether he was Semitic, North African, Nubian or Teutonic. Only the latter is out of the question.
I tell you sincerely that what we do NOW, is what is important. How we deal with people, with the world. That is why Obama fascinates the world. Why what we, as Brooklynites of all races and colors need to unite to protect what we love, not worry so much about the color of the hand reached out in friendship.
MM: No worries about the late response – I’m teaching that lesson tomorrow. Sorry it provoked the wrath of the What (although I must say his confusion between astrology and astronomy was a good laugh!).
Kensingtonian: I might head over to Sycamore tonight. The man-date will happen one of these days!
dibs, The thing about hangovers is that you know you going to feel better eventually, those poor tea-totalers wake up the best they’re going to feel, nothing to look forward to.

“CH – is that the Greek dish or perhaps middle eastern?
b/c man I think I know what that is and it’s unreal!”
Gem, well, I think the place that I used to go to in San Francisco to get it was Moroccan. But I think other nationalities make similar dishes.
I have such wonderful memories of it! I tried to make it recently, and uhm, well, uh, it didn’t turn out so great!
