  1. Because I have no real professional qualifications, and what I used to do has been outsourced to Chennai and Cleveland. Not that it’s entirely a bad thing… as long as my loved one stays employed.

Anyways, yeah — although lying on a resume is formally frowned upon, it’s pretty much okay as long as you don’t get caught. I had to tone down mine a few times during career switches and tone it up for others.

Another tack you can take is the, “I’ve decided I want a fresh start and a career doing… x.” For retail, I guess that’d be sales or merchandising or what have you.

If I were going to go for a retail job now (and I’ve contemplated it), I’d also try the approach of “I’m looking for something to do while the kids are at school/camp/college/whathaveyou.” Of course, this method may work best if you have kids. Not sure if it would work for pets, significant others, or plants.

  2. MM, I’ve been heading down to my law school and got access to an online job bank they have. So far it’s a bust but I’m still working it everyday. My pals from college? They are asking me for a job! Ha!
