  1. “The societal celebration of athletics over brains is really misplaced.”

Agreed, but most americans understand that athletically they don’t have the correct skill set to succeed in sports, but many americans think they are qualified to become president.

But the fact that they got 7 kids into Harvard this year is definitely more important!

why are those 7 kids going to harvard any more important than perhaps maybe 7 kids going to college on a sports scholarship? i’m almost more likely to say the 7 going to school on a sports scholarship are actually more important than the 7 going to harvard..

Why is it ok to cheer the high school star athlete in Basketball all day long with mentions in the local papers and write ups in local blogs while the kids toiling away and getting a good score on an aptitude test are supposed to shut up and be quiet about it?

THis is exactly what happened at Hicksville High school, circa 1962-66 when I was a student there. Not so at Brooklyn Tech now. Sports are important to the school and there are a zillion different sports teams and clubs. But the fact that they got 7 kids into Harvard this year is definitely more important!

  4. I think the last time I watched Miss America was in college, when one of the girls at my school was Miss Alabama.

I don’t remember finding any of them terribly attractive.

My theory is that pageants, like many other organizations/cultures, develop their own standards over time that are not necessarily in synch with larger society.
By now, pageants largely measure how well you measure up to the standards of the pageant world.

The same could probably be said about academics and most “high” arts.
