  1. dh- do I now have to go out and buy magic underwear?

bfarwell- as someone with an anthropology degree, I am fascinated by belief systems ans religions. I respect them, even when I don’t understand their reasoning. But more often, most beliefs within context are understandable. Some are just not acceptable and I use Westboro as an example because essentially I’ve always viewed religion as a survival structure. It’s how people comprehend the universe around them. (And is loosely include atheists and agnostics in that as well.) But over time, some people start to evolve non-useful, negative concepts from a positive belief- and again, Westboro is one good example.

Some ideas really have no true meaning other than as a reaction to an environment. The long list of rules and practices of Hasids is an example of how a group can change as a reaction to a stressful environment.

Doesn’r mean ribbing them about the clothes and payess isn’t allowed (I date no man who has longer curls than me) but insulting them for believing in Judaism is a whole other concept I don’t buy into. I don’t question the Rapturists for believing in Jesus, nor do I make fun of that. But believing the world will end tomorrow- that’s another story.

  2. Quote: By BedstuyMaven – The Rapture in the end of the world. It is the beinning of the end. During the raputure God will take up to heaven certain people.

Thanks, bsm. this study is complicated. So the Rapture is first, then the Second Coming? No wonder we are [I am] getting things mixed up.

  3. Meh, all the religious outliers are just as serious about their beliefs (if not more so) than your average runofthemill monotheist. I don’t think making fun of them is any different from making fun of more mainstream beliefs (look at the funny hat!).

And I’m fine with both. Now, I think someone at some point back there made a distinction between being meanspirited and hateful or being more lighthearted mockery about it, which seems like a more relevant point.

But playing ‘whose religion is the crazy one’ will get you nowhere. One man’s crazy is another man’s rich and meaningful belief system.

  4. The quote right before that; Jesus is addressing the Disciples, telling them to have courage as they go around proselytizing:

Luke 21 8-9: “He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them. 9 When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”
