  1. Nothing wrong with bringing possible opposition into the fold. “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.” Bush appointed Ken Feinberg for 9/11 claims. Ken was both the right person for the job and his appointment made it impossible for dems to turn Bush’s handling of 9/11 claims into political football. (Feinberg was extremely close to Ted Kennedy.) The question is your obligation if you accept the appointment from across the aisle. Not every republican Obama asked to serve agreed to do so, in part because they could not resolve the conflict between the commitment to service in a dem admin and their own views and interests.

  2. DIBS those things are no joke. One of those magnets on your chest and one on your back and you would be crushed / suffocated to death. They can crush bone if you get your hand between them or between one of them and a metal surface.

  3. “there was plenty of speculation that the obama administration appointed him to that post in order remove him somewhat from the public eye stateside. ”

This is what they say, the administration had in mind by moving Petraeus into the administration fold.
