When my dad died, I cashed in his 401K and then fucked up the tax calculations. The IRS figured out about 6 months after I filed and sent me a nice letter.
I paid it and forgot about it.
Some time later, the State of Alabama figured out I owned them money as well, and tried to contact me at an old address. Even though I had filed taxes at my new address and was paying property taxes on that address, that was too complicated for them. Instead, they tracked down my place of employment and put a lien on my wages – something like $100 a month for 2 months.
For the next 10 years, that lien stayed on my credit report, and every time I wanted a loan I had to produce evidence that the lien was paid every time I wanted to take out a loan. It made me mad each time.
i was exonerated from those two years i supposedly didnt file 2003, and 2004 tho. im not even sure they were correct about me not filing, but there is a big chance i didnt file state those years. but this says for 2010
Dave, you know I’m shaking in boots, worried that it was that child free tax credit that raised a red flag!
But yeah, prolly catching up for when he didnt file.
and there were two different handwritings on the form?
*rob*
okay i bet they audited me cuz i whited out some stuff on the form and changed it instead of starting on a new form? is that possible?

No good deed goes unpunished.

quote:
Never heard of state audit of a return. What years is it for?
it says 2010
let me get the letter.
“weve reviewed you new york state income tax return an d need more information in order to pay your refund”
then there is a page with blank lines that say “response to audit inquiry” new york state tax audit – youir rights and responsibilities.

rob, is it for that year you thought you didn’t file? There’s nothing to audit or contest on a state return and a 1040EZ.
