  1. Lech, I think that the goal is for the kid to be happy and everybody to celebrate the kid. That means having a special day when they get to be the king or queen and feel great. They don’t need all that crap to feel that. They need their mother, father, brothers, sisters, cousins, grandparents, presents, cake, songs, games (even if they are dumb) and for everyone to make a big deal over them.
The issue becomes “peer pressure” when it becomes the norm for their friends to have these big things. I never had birthday parties with friends. They were family things only. But they were really fun because everbody came over.

typically i don’t care about how people spend their money – but extravagant 1 year birthday parties just impresses me as a pissing contest btw bored parents.

use that 10k to pay for babysitters so you don’t drag your whining brat out to brunch on sundays when i’m trying to chill and eat eggs.

I assumed this was rob posting until I looked a second time.

  3. In California for my son’s 5th-9th birthdays, we did the same thing every year.
We had a pool right outside the door to our townhouse and his birthday was in June, so we’d have people over for a swim party.
We’d grill hot dogs and hamburgers, make sure plenty of wine was on hand for the parents, and do the cake thing at the end.

This year, we are having a handful of people over and I’m going to grill on the patio. I’m sure Wendy will come up with a few party games.

I don’t get spending obscene amounts of money for a kid’s party.

Growing up, there were no special parties or events until graduation.

    that’s just sad.

im not sure why you think 10K is absurd for a child’s birthday party. how is it any more absurd than people who pay ten dollar a scoop ice cream!? at least bitchday parties create memories

    *rob*
