  1. Thanks for that Legion. I want to get to know Queens better. I think of myself as a dyed in the wool New Yorker, but big parts of Queens are a mystery to me. Plus they have that annoying habit of using the a name for a street and making a street with a Pl. Ave. St. Blvd. Even Queens people admit to needing a Tom Tom to get around someplaces.

  2. Re contortionist typist:

HA!!! Oh yeah, that’s me! 🙂

I have those gold lame boots and the outfit, well maybe I’ll get that out when I finish this Pilates course.
And the flotaki rug, great! really 1970s.

  3. Who wanted to know more about Queens?

    Here’s the thing about Queens,
It’s always been New York’s middle child.
Not the step-child like Staten Island but the middle child which always has to prove itself.
It’s never been a “fashionable” place in terms of being hip.
It’s always been non-ironic. What you see is what you get, so in that sense, it has a certain unintentional hipness to it in certain areas.
It’s so large that it’s hard to cover all the different neighborhoods. One thing is for sure, Queens is still a borough of defined neighborhoods. You will still find the original New York accent in many areas like Maspeth which is like Bay Ridge 20 years ago or Glendale which is very conservative and middle class.
You have Forest Hills which has always been a rich enclave, specifically the private streets around Old Forest Hills where the US Tennis open was held up until the early 80’s. McEnroe is from there.
Jackson Heights has always been very commercial with a mix of South American and Indian first generations.
Woodside is still an old school Queens neighborhood with many Irish and Italian living in the area. You will find pubs a plenty there.
Astoria, traditionally Greek now much more of a hip, young place.
Jamaica is in Southern queens black, hispanic, caribbean. Very commercial. Big transit hub. No such thing as a hipster in Jamaica.
Whitestone, middle to upper middle class enclave. Sleepy streets with a decidedly non-edgy feel. McMansions popping up everywhere. Nice views of the Whitestone bridge along high priced Malba neighborhood.
Flushing, massively crowded and very cool to walk around. End of the 7 line. Large majority Asian.
Kew Gardens, Jewish enclave, a lot of young families, overlooking Flughing Meadow Park site of two World Fairs.

Those are just a few of the neighborhoods.

  4. rob, actually the room was part of a 3 bd share and it was my potential roommates who made the call… they had only moved into the place at the start of april, so they’re totally freaked out and too broke to just bail on the place. I’m just lucky I didn’t move in when they did!

  5. I ended up at the bar at the Waldorf last night with a colleague. 100% of the women at that bar are hookers. I’m not exaggerating at all. They are all hookers.

A wife of a friend told me she went to the bar there once and the bartenders were rude and wouldn’t serve her. She eventually figured out it was because they thought she was working and hadn’t given the bartenders whatever they charge the girls to let them sit there.

So the bartenders at the Waldorf are making some extra scratch by charging the working girls a fee to sit up at the bar. Of course most of the patrons are fat businessmen from out of town who have a room in the hotel. The whole scene just cracks me up.

  6. quote:
I’m choosing to live with the rats at my house rather than move into the sublet I was supposed to take. they called just a couple days before I was set to move stuff in to say they found bedbugs!

hmm. was it the management company who called you directly and told you this? there are unscrupulous people who will go to open houses for very in demand apartments and take a photo of the sign in list and then call everyone person on that list and say that the apartment has been found to have bedbugs and would you still like it? of course any sane person will be like oh hells no. but you aint talking with the owner or the management company youre talking to someone who wants that apartment!!!
