Lech, many are, especially on Thursday but not other nights and Jamesons & Clancy’s are typically not, nor is Mcneils. The frat boy places are Turtle Bay and the ones next to it on 2nd between 52 & 53.
The Irish bartenders at the other places don’t put up with them.
True donatella,
Hard to get around without knowing the area.
The only brownstones I know of in Queens are in Long Island City and there are very few of them there.
There are many old Victorian homes though, for instance in Woodhaven there are huge 3 and 4 story Victorians with big pieces of land around them. Similar to homes you see on Albemarle Road.
Jamaica Estates has real mansions. Huge old homes sitting on hill tops. Douglaston as well.
Much of queens has rows of closely spaced wood frame houses which have been sided with vinyl or aluminum over the years. Neat but undistinguished.
There are great old apartment complexes throughout Queens, particularly in Sunnyside and Jackson Heights. Pre-war buildings with good space and cheap compared to Brooklyn.
Sunnyside has many multifamily brick buildings built in the 30′-40’s with good space and nice layouts. Built to last.
Fascination with Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland if they are old and Lady gaga if they are young?
Well, if you contrast what I know about Manhattan, Bronx, Staten Island, and Brooklyn, I know neighborhoods, places to go, but Queens has a lot of neighborhoods that I don’t know and also it is embarrassing to get lost there. I have gotten lost a couple of times trying to get home from the airport after getting off the main drag due to traffic. That’s not supposed to happen if you supposedly know NY.
Dona, the wife had friends over and gave me carte blanche to go out for a few drinks in the city, so I took her up on it. Ended up at the Waldorf with guys from work.
DIBS those bars on 2nd Ave are UES frat boy trash heaps. Yech.
jester- they’re sort of trite, but Aerons are really comfy. My wife knows a fair amount about office chairs, if you’re interested…

I lived for a summer in Astoria, and really liked it, especially the frappes. The best drink of the season.
The Back Page on 2nd and 51st is good too.
And if you’re entertaining a client that wants to ogle at younger women, the Monkey Bar at the Hotel Elysee or the bar at Lever House restaurant.
If the client is older and gay, the Townhouse Bar on 58th between 2 & 3.
There’s also a nice quiet bar on 57th around 2 & 3…can’t remember then name
This is where I used to live
