  1. No slopey – I’m saying that focusing on that landlord takes people’s eye off the ball. The bigger picture here is that the government has destroyed these buildings. The fact that there are people who buy them for whatever their motives might happen to be doesn’t change that at all. The government’s wrongdoing is not cleansed by the interposition of a questionable commercial player.

  2. Are you saying, jackal, that someone who buys a rent controlled building has no responsibility to the tenants because the laws (which existed when he bought the building) don’t allow for a sufficient income stream? That is, the LL, who knew or should have known when he bought the building that he could not earn enough in rent to maintain it, has no responsibility to maintain it? It’s all the government’s fault? How is that different from saying that a person who knew or should have known (i.e., no fraud by the bank) that the mortgage they were taking out on their home was more than they could afford was not responsible for the foreclosure — i.e. it was all the bank’s fault?

  3. It’s astonishing to me that you guys think the moral balance actually changes when there is a sale.

The government is responsible for the condition of RC apartments. Plain and simple.
