An artist struggles to create something meaningful, beautiful, thought provoking, moving, interesting.
And he manages to communicate in this way to people who aren’t primarily motivated by being cool or fashionable.
100 people sit around at a cocktail party blabbering on about the latest art show. Majority opinion will determine whether the art is good or not. People will act like a bunch of fart-sniffing pretentious sheep, and as soon as they can figure out which way the trend is going they’ll pretend to get out ahead of the trend with some clever thing to say.
SCENARIO 2:
100 people sit around at a cocktail party blabbering on about the latest scientific discovery. Guess what – IT DOESN’T FUCKING MATTER WHAT THEY THINK!!!! THEIR OPINIONS ARE IRRELEVANT!!!! They can all agree one way or the other, and it simply doesn’t matter. There is an objective truth, and they can sit around talking about it all night, or not, who cares, what they think changes nothing.
Okay, so on some level yes, art is like lots of other stuff, in that its value is determined by what you think its value is.
However, in the same way that some movies are just about making you feel good and forget your shitty life for 2 hours, some art is actually engaged with actual ideas and trying to figure stuff out.
Not that all art that does that is good, or that it couldn’t simultaneously make you feel happy for an hour or two, but it’s complex and interesting a way that Thomas Kinkade isn’t.
(or, which thomas kinkade is as a phenomenon, but not as an artist.)
Lech, on my drive back to nyc, I saw a bunch of trucks hauling stacks of fresh cut timber and it kept triggering what you said about timberland being a nice alternative investment for portfolio. too bad, it’s hard to get financing.
Hey my world runs on bullshit too. That’s why I spend so much time reading about physics and math and stuff. There is an objective truth that is utterly incapable of being influenced by human bullshit.
True bfarwell, but your very valid point will probably escape some on the OT. 🙂

Silly hue-mons.
The business-philanthropist Eli Broad’s favorite artist is Jeff Koons.

That makes you cringe worthy, no?
