  1. Rob, old people are also expensive to society. Children grow up to work and pay taxes so whatever they cost is an investment in their future. There’s no return on spending for old people, and if fewer children are born, there will be fewer working-age adults to pay taxes and support the larger number of old people. It’s not just in Japan that this is happening–it’s happening in western Europe and China too.

  2. For Mother’s Day yesterday, my daughter brought over her DVD of the movie “What about Bob?” starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss. This movie wasn’t a particularly big hit, but it’s become a classic in my house. There is something about that movie that cracks us up, and so we watch it every so often, even if we know many of the lines by now.
