Goddammit. No Jeapardy tonight. Had to endure 30 extra minutes of Diane Sawyer trying to sound all pedantic and broken up over the state of things now that Osama has been captured and the fate of us all going forward.
These network newcasters take themselves way too seriously
” Nobody can underestimate how completely demoralized the US was at that time – post Vietnam, Watergate, stagflation dead ecomony, etc. and then that, the hostages and Carter who just seemed to not be able to do anything right.. ”
Very true – I remember it well. What made it even more demoralizing was the fact that there were folks (in the US) who revelled in the US’ impotence.
No- steampunk has been around a long time, it’s just that it’s being “discovered” the last few years. For some people it’s a style and a look, for others, its an art form. The best stuff is very very cool.
I just googled Operation Eagle Claw to refresh my memory- not being so knowledgeable about mechanics of helicopters, I guess the details at the time didn’t register, but what I do remember was the desert sand (actually kind of dust storm) messing up the engines and the whole operation failing. It was that the dust obscured vision and caused massve disorientation and ultimate crashing of several of the helicopters. Ultimately it was just remembered by everyone as a massive FAIL. I remember following this then, that was the last time that commodity markets were soaring. Then for diffrent reasons, collapsed dollar, stagflation, Petrodollars with nowhere to go…. This was the final gasp for Carter.
I know! I was annoyed, too! Pfffft!

“I think you and e-sil are duking it out for the # 2 and # 3 spot.”
Oh? I was sure I was much further down the list! : P

So is steampunk what nerds do now that there is no more star trek or battlestar galactica?

Because, CGr- I rightly assumed I am number one in your book 😉
dibs- what? You think 5 mansions, several smaller properties, a home for the e-sil and all the antique furniture I want is “pay?”
