bxgrl, I can’t feel joy that he is dead. I have to admit relief. Relief that he can’t mastermind any more plots. Relief that no more lives will be lost at his hand. Relief that those that lost family members and friends may be able to feel some semblance of justice although it will not bring their loved ones back. But my stomach churned to see people dancing and celebrating in the streets It brought back memories of those who danced in the street after 9/11.
It was a sad but necessary event. But I can’t rejoice and dance in the street.
*sigh* I wish I was that good. MLK is one of my heroes. But there are 2 people whom I do rejoice are dead- Hitler, and Osama. In an odd way you could say love did drive him out- love of families, love of country, love of those lost- it was beyond simple vengeance and the loss of Osama wasn’t the loss of a human being, it was the loss of a monster. Sometimes you do have to kill the monsters to drive back darkness.
I believe MLK said this in a very different context, in any case.
‎”I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.
rf, if you learned to dance you could dance in the streeets
