Hello everyone,
A great day in American History.
Great job Obama, Petraeus, CIA , Navy Seals.
Nice to see young Americans actually happy
and cheering for good news in front of the White House.
Dona- I completely agree. The memorial and museum aside, The Trade Center rebuilt will be the real celebration.
I’m glad he’s dead- but I don’t think of it as vengeance so much as necessity. He got what he deserved- I only wish he had suffered as much as he made tens of thousands of innocent people suffer. But his death was a magnitude far above simple vengeance or tit for tat. Maybe when Obama said justice was done, that was really the only way to describe it.
I liked the fact that Obama was understated about killing Obama. I am not happy that he is dead per se, feel sort of shitty about crowing for vengence. I am glad that they found him, they got him – after all, that was the point of being in Pak/Afghanistan to eliminate him as a threat and to disable Al Queda. They did it. And the military, CIA, everybody can feel proud that they accomplished that. Al Queda is active elsewhere and Osama bin Laden less and less of a real “player” in the terrorist movement. It is a blow for them though. It is really really encouraging that despite the complicity of the Pakistan gov’t with terrorist that the US was able to get good enough intelligence to find him. THAT is really encouraging to me because intelligence is what is going to drive this effort, not hardware.
I will do my celebrating when they rebuild the WTC. I emailed my brother (lost 30 men at WTC and got hurt himself) that THAT would make me crow, that human beings can rebuild and overcome, that we dust ourselves off and prevail.
cobble- my immediate reaction was to think of all the people I know from Ground Zero and thinking how emotional this must be for them. Then I cried. Then answered a flurry of emails. I also wonder about what to expect but most of the Arab world seems to be breathing a sigh of relief that he’s gone. As Obama said, bin Laden was a mass murderer of Muslims too.
MM, I am going to get my book and compare details with you tomorrow. Despite my cranky comment, there was a lot about that tour which was really interesting. I like a lot of light, clean lines, interesting glass, and have a case by case approach to woodwork. Some of it can be dark and overwhelming, some of it really elegant. So those tastes colored my approach to several of the places.
My immediate reaction was relief (happiness really). Secondly, was remorse that I cheered someone’s death in front of my child (teen). Then I got happy again, and yes, worried what would happen now.
I really dont get the “its bad to cheer someone’s death” guilt
Cheering the death of someone like Bin Laden, is actually a celebration of life…..
Was someone expecting a rehabilitation or something?
Dona- James Hanlon was saying pretty much what you did re bin laden’s death.

From Fran Wendelboe, Former member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives (R) [of course]
“It appears we have his body and it needs to be prominently displayed and validated as to it being bin Laden with no room for doubt.”
It’s starting, folks!…the Deathers are gearing up.
