  1. “Everyone who comments on the church has had some experience with it that has influenced their opinion. The fact that their experience and opinion is different from yours does not deprive them of the right to express it here.”

in benson’s defense – i haven’t heard many people besides Scott on here who have had 1st hand experiences with the church to warrant developing any opinions of the church as a whole. i’ve heard a lot of hearsay of experiences of friends and friends of friends.

and i am by no means some crazy catholic defender – i find all organized religion to be meh.

  2. Benson,

Everyone who comments on the church has had some experience with it that has influenced their opinion. The fact that their experience and opinion is different from yours does not deprive them of the right to express it here.

  3. “I don’t think the Catholic Church would say showing up for a couple of services would put you in good standing. You are to attend every week. Also, why would you choose a GodParent who does not practice?”

Depends on the parish. My old parish on Long Island had a special program for folks who wanted to be married in the church but were non-practicing – to get them back in “good standing” It consisted of a few night classes after work, and attending 3 Sunday masses.

  4. I was chosen as a god parent because the parents thought I would be a good surrogate if anything happened to them & also that I would be a positive influence on their kids. And so it has proved: I am still deeply involved w/ them – one is 37 & another is 47 – 2 others are much younger.
